Job Description

The Book Depository is looking for experienced software developers with strong Computer Science fundamentals and practical experience building web applications and distributed systems, to help grow our business, delight our customers, and take advantage of Amazon’s unique technology platform.

After building several generations of bookdepository.com using LAMP and PHP, we’re now also adopting Java and Amazon technologies. We’re looking for developers to join our newly formed Madrid development team, to grow and improve our existing systems and to deliver exciting new features using Amazon’s unique technology platform.

Working in our agile development team, this role is responsible for designing, developing, testing, delivering and supporting a broad variety of systems including customer-facing website technology, 20M-item catalogue management systems, search services, checkout and order pipelines, supply chain, data warehouse, and warehouse management systems.

Our developers collaborate closely with The Book Depository’s commercial and leadership teams in the UK and with Amazon technical teams worldwide. Our ideal candidate will actively take advantage of this wealth of technical, creative and commercial experience to deliver astounding solutions as part of a hard-working, fast-moving, passionate and effective team.

Alongside the exceptional opportunities to grow your technical and non-technical skills we’ll make sure you’re well rewarded. As well as a competitive salary and stock units we offer benefits including 25 days plus public holidays, pension scheme, medical cover and employee discounts… plus the excellent long-term development prospects you’d expect from Earth’s leading online retailer!

Basic Qualifications

If you have a bachelors in Computer Science, or are a postgraduate with a related degree with a strong grounding in Computer Science and Software Engineering, we want to talk to you.

Technology-wise we’re looking for people with proven skills in Java or C++. Knowledge of LAMP or PHP would also be a plus, as would experience of OO design, microservice design patterns and web services.

Preferred Qualifications

If you’re innovative, motivated, passionate about designing and building world-class systems, and eager to see your software used by millions of customers, The Book Depository is the place for you. This is your opportunity to work in a unique environment surrounded by books and book lovers, learn a huge amount about ecommerce and enterprise systems, create robust software to solve real-world problems at huge scale, and be part of a close-knit team who all love creating a unique shopping experience for our customers across the globe.
